About the event
Join us for a Fireside Chat with Mable Chan AM ’93 (Film Investor, Journalist, Writer) and Nonfiction filmmaker Emma D. Miller.
Have you ever wondered how a nonfiction film gets funded and how a film investor chooses a project? Join us for a lively conversation with Mable Chan and Emma Miller for an insider look at the fundraising process of documentary feature films including MISTRESS DISPELLER, for which Emma is producer and Mable is consulting producer.
Mable Chan is Executive Producer and Founder of One in a Billion Productions Inc (501c3), a nonprofit media company designed to empower Asian voices in films and podcasts. MISTRESS DISPELLER, (premiere at Venice/Toronto Film Festival 2024) directed by Elizabeth Lo and produced by Emma D Miller, is the first project supported by One in a Billion for which she is serving as a Consulting Producer. One in a Billion Productions Inc invests in documentaries that are Asian-focused or Asian-directed through equity or grants, and produces character-driven podcast interviews with Asian writers, producers and entrepreneurs.
A Peabody Award-winning network news producer and named one of the “Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business” Awardee in 2013, Mable had worked as a broadcast network news producer at ABC, NBC and CBS for over twenty years. Mable's first love is journalism. She recently joined the New York Times as a freelance reporter for the metro desk. She also serves on the board of the AAJA (Asian American Journalists Association) New England Chapter.
Emma D. Miller is a nonfiction filmmaker and the founder of Marcona Media, a production company whose work explores the strange and beautiful messiness of being human. Her projects have been supported by Sundance Institute, Ford Foundation, Field of Vision, Impact Partners, and Anonymous Content, among others, and have been selected by festivals including Venice, Toronto, SXSW, Camden, and Morelia. She is the producer of Elizabeth Lo's MISTRESS DISPELLER (Venice/Toronto 2024) and Iliana Sosa's Gotham Award-nominated, SXSW award-winning WHAT WE LEAVE BEHIND (ARRAY Releasing/Netflix). She is also the co-producer of an upcoming feature for National Geographic Documentary Films and the director of the short documentary THE SCHOOL OF CANINE MASSAGE, which premiered at SXSW 2024 and was acquired by Kanopy. As development executive at Concordia Studio, she worked on Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning films that premiered at Sundance, Tribeca, and Telluride, including TIME, BOYS STATE, and PROCESSION. Other credits include Showtime's COUPLES THERAPY, the Oscar-nominated short KNIFE SKILLS (The New Yorker), and the Oscar-shortlisted, Sundance award-winning feature UNREST (Independent Lens/Netflix). Named one of DOC NYC’s “40 Under 40” in 2022, Emma is a 2023 Sundance Producers Fellow and 2024 JFI Filmmaker in Residence. She is currently directing her feature directorial debut, FATHER FIGURES.
