  • The Safety Net Fund - for Bay Area artists

    The Safety Net Fund is a non-profit designed to help support artists in the Bay Area during the COVID-19 crisis. As the world around us descends into bedlam, we turn towards each other to find hope, support, and community.

    We prioritize artists that typically make their living offline at events & retail establishments that have been cancelled or closed due to coronavirus. This includes performing artists, musicians, visual artists, event producers, and other types of creators.

    This fund will offer grants to artists, with no expectation of repayment, to help provide direct monetary support through this crisis. This money is offered with the intent of helping artists survive and continue to create despite the maelstrom. The maximum grant is $500 per person per month, and the number of grants per month is dependent upon the funds raised.

    Grants will be offered on a needs-basis with the following criteria:

    1. The grantee must reside in the Bay Area (See attached list of eligible zip codes)
    2. The grantee must provide proof of artistic endeavor within the last 6 months
    3. The grantee must not be eligible for unemployment
    4. The grantee must have less than $1000 of income within the last 30 days
    5. Grants will be evaluated in the order received.

    The fund is made possible through a fiscal sponsorship from the California Intersection for the Arts (The Intersection). The Intersection has agreed to support this project with accounting, governance, and compliance with the minimum administrative fees possible (7%). The fund will employ the minimum number of claims administrators necessary to manage incoming claims. All other funds will be disbursed to eligible applicants. The fund will provide a transparency report yearly.

    Amazon Prime launches shorts competition for underrepresented filmmakers

    Prime Video will host the first annual All Voices Film Festival, celebrating underrepresented communities. This digital short film festival is seeking entries from filmmakers in the U.S. from all backgrounds, where the creator or content represents the diversity of our world. Submissions are open and will be accepted until May 20th, 2019.

    The writer, director, cast or theme of the short must reflect underrepresented communities. This includes but is not limited to people of color, ethnic, gender and religious minorities, members of the LGBTQI community, people with disabilities, veterans, young, aspiring filmmakers as well as older adults, and other groups that are underrepresented or marginalized in the US or globally. Submissions must be published as a “Standalone” film in the “Short Films” category, offer availability set to “US” and “Prime”, and may not exceed 40 minutes. The title must also comply with the requirements to be included in Prime Video, including (i) HD picture quality, (ii) closed captioned or subtitled and (iii) have a rating of “R” or less (or an equivalent through local rating agencies).

    All submissions must comply with the Rules and Regulations.

  • Boston/Cambridge screenwriters, apply to join the 2018-19 Writers Program

    The 2018-19 Harvardwood Writers Program in Boston will begin meeting weekly in early October, and we're accepting applications from interested writers now through Sept. 25th.

    New participants will be asked to submit a short writing sample, a bio or resume, and a paragraph stating what you'd like to work on with the group this year. Only Harvardwood members are eligible to apply and participate, so if you're not a current member, join Harvardwood or renew your membership before accessing the application link. The participation fee is $80/writer.

    Give to the HSIP Travel Fund

    Your donation to this fund will enable Harvard students participating in the Harvardwood Summer Internship Program to travel to/from events hosted by the program throughout the summer. Many students interning in Los Angeles do not have access to a car, and the travel funds go strictly toward ridesharing or public transportation expenses to attend HSIP events.

This summer, I was able to attend numerous Harvardwood events in the LA area, including a private tour of Elon Musk's SpaceX facility, a visit to Lin Pictures [now Rideback] - the creators of the Lego Movie and It, and an alumni event in which I was able to share the room with numerous Harvard alumni working in the entertainment industry. Being a member of the Harvardwood community has allowed me to have the opportunity to meet with a handful of very powerful and influential individuals in entertainment who have shown me the true reality of what the industry is really like, and what to expect when looking for jobs in the future."
