Harvardwood Presents: Independent Film Distribution

In this virtual session, hear Gene Pao HBS '97 describe the inner workings as to how independent films are windowed, released, and promoted, as well as how independent film distribution strategies varies considerably from blockbuster films. Topics include film selection criteria, theatrical booking, digital transaction release strategies, and how these decisions affect later revenue streams including Pay 1 licensing deals and digital streaming.
Gene Pao (HBS '97) is currently EVP, Strategy and Digital at Shout! Studios, an independent film and TV distributor, where he oversees overall company strategy, production, marketing, distribution, and digital operations. Over the past several years, Shout has expanded its business to indie film distribution--having released a number new films this year including LINOLEUM (Jim Gaffigan), THE MAGIC FLUTE (F. Murray Abraham), WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT? (Shazad Latif, Lily James, Emma Thompson), and hitting theaters on 9/29, THE KILL ROOM (Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, Joe Manganiello). Prior to Shout, Gene spent 12 years at Disney, Fox, and NBCU in cable distribution, digital media, and live sports broadcasting/livestreaming. In 2022, Gene was named one of the Top 40 Most Important People In Streaming by Media Play News.

Harvardwood Suggests... The Writers Guild Foundation, Script Anatomy and Winnie Holzman Present: Writers Time with Special Guest Ilana Peña

Writers Time is an hourlong Zoom to help writers like you stay inspired and motivated through these difficult times.
In the first half hour we’ll write silently “alone together” on our respective projects– (and if you need something to get you started, there’ll be writing prompts too.) Then, in the second half hour, we’ll host a craft Q&A with Winnie Holzman and Special Guest Writers.
And it’s free!

Science Center, Harvard, 1 Oxford Street, CambridgeJoin us for a movie screening of LOVE IN TAIPEI, based on the New York Times’ best-selling novel LOVEBOAT, TAIPEI by Abigail Hing Wen. In the novel, a young American woman, Ever Wong, is sent by her parents to a cultural immersion program in Taipei – inspired by an actual program attended by thousands of Chinese and Taiwanese diaspora youth – where she begins a new journey of self-discovery and romance. Movie screening will be followed by a Q&A with author and executive producer Abigail Hing Wen at 10:45pm.
