Music Publishing 101: An Introduction to the Intricate and Important World of Music Publishing

Where is My Money? Music publisher Al Evers (A-Train) and music attorney Daniel Schacht (Donahue Fitzgerald LLP) will discuss the tangled web of songwriter royalties, accounting, sub-publishers, copyrights, mechanical royalties, and more.

Presenters:

cla.jpgDaniel J. Schacht is an attorney at Donahue Gallagher Woods LLP, specializing in intellectual property, technology, and music law. He handles a variety of copyright, trademark, licensing, employment and general business matters for artists such as Carlos Santana, Journey, and Amon Tobin. He currently serves as co-counsel in Good Morning to You Productions Corp. et al. v. Warner/Chappell Music, Inc., the "Happy Birthday" class action lawsuit described by the New York Times as "a lawsuit for the ages." Before law school, Mr. Schacht worked ten years in the Bay Area music scene as a bassist, sound engineer, studio owner, and producer.

Al Evers is the founder and owner of A Train Entertainment, founded as an option for independent artists to receive professional assistance in developing and managing their musical careers. Over the years, A Train has expanded its services to include: publishing administration, artist management, physical and digital distribution, international sales and more. A Train administers over 200,000 song titles while allowing artists to maintain ownership. A Train's catalog of digitally distributed titles doubled last year, averaging 50 new albums per month.
