For four decades, Andrei Serban has been one of the most original, innovative, and internationally influential directors in theater and opera. His work has been seen in New York in venues ranging from La Mama to Lincoln Center (including Aeschylus's Agamemnon, and his Tony-winning production of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard starring Irene Worth, Meryl Streep, and Raul Julia) to the Metropolitan Opera. He has staged plays and operas at the royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Comédie Française, the Opera de Paris, the Guthrie, the Vienna State Opera, the Royal National Theater, and major theaters and opera houses throughout the world.
He won an Obie for Fragments of a Greek Trilogy at La Mama. He has also been honored with the Elliot Norton Award for Sustained Excellence, and the George Abbott Award from the Society of Stage Directors & Choreographers, honoring artists who have made a major impact on the theater, the Romanian Star (Romania's highest honor), and, in 2009, the Robert Brustein Award.
Many of Serban's productions were staged at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard, including his legendary production of The King Stag (at which many theatergoers first encountered the puppetry of Julie Taymor), as well as The Juniper Tree, Sganarelle, The Miser, Three Sisters, Pericles, and many more.
He has, in addition, been Professor of Theater at Columbia University since 1992, directing the Hammerstein Center for Theater Studies and heading the MFA Acting Program. He has also taught at Harvard, Yale, Le Conservatoire de Paris, and Carnegie-Mellon.
Andrei Serban will speak about and take questions on theater, opera, and the education of theater professionals.
