Harvard Professor John Stauffer: How the South Won The Civil War--and why it still matters!
With
Lee's surrender to Grant at Appomattox, the South had lost the Civil
War. Yet, within less than three decades, southern blacks had been
returned to near slavery, and the south effectively controlled the
policies of the national government. How did this happen? And how
does this still affect us even today?
John
Stauffer is Chair of the History of American Civilization Program, and
Professor of English and of African and African American Studies at
Harvard University. He is a leading scholar of the Civil War era,
antislavery, and interracial relations. The author or editor of seven
books and more than 50 articles, Stauffer loves exploring literature to
expand our understanding of history, and history to deepen our
understanding of literature.
Built in 1887, the stunning landmark Down Town Association clubhouse is
the perfect period setting for a discussion of the post-Civil War era.
The evening will begin with a reception for Professor Stauffer from 6
to 6:45 p.m. with open bar, cheeses, and light hors d'oeuvres.
Following Professor Stauffer's talk, Harvardwood members will be
welcome to stay to purchase dinner (credit cards will be accepted from
Harvardwood members) in the Down Town Association's very
elegant dining room. (Professor Stauffer will be staying for dinner
himself.)
