Central to Beethoven's vision, the variation form, which for his greatest recent predecessors was a relatively lightweight opportunity for the display of compositional bravura, gradually came to embody a profoundly intense spiritual journey.  Beethoven's Diabelli Variations are widely considered one of the two greatest sets of variations ever written and a pinnacle of Western civilization.

In this special lecture/performance, pianist Yelena Grinberg will guide us through the musical and spiritual subtleties of this profound masterpiece.  At the end of her talk, Grinberg will give a complete performance of the Diabelli Variations.

Yelena Grinberg is rapidly gaining recognition as one of the most brilliant and poetic young artists on the classical music scene.  She has performed with the Moscow Symphony, as well as at important festivals in England, Spain, France, and Switzerland.  She has won major awards in numerous competitions, and was the 2005 winner of the Artists International Competition.  Her solo recital at Carnegie Hall's Weill Hall was hailed by the New York Concert Review as a "grand performance in a grand tradition."

Our friends at the Down Town Association are making this event available to Harvardwood members at a special reduced price--just $10 for Full Members and Friends of Harvardwood and their guests. (Affiliates and others pay $15.)  This includes a reception at 6 p.m. with wine or beer and light hors d'oeuvres and cheeses, followed by the lecture and performance at 7 p.m.

Following the performance, Harvardwood members are invited to stay to purchase dinner (credit cards will be accepted from Harvardwood members) in the Down Town Association's very elegant dining room.
